With 365 beaches, one for every day of the year Antigua is a tropical paradise. It's cooling trade winds ensure the weather is perfect for water sports and sailing which is evident in the impressive array of yachts moored around its harbors.
Away from the beach there is plenty to see and do. A definate must see is Nelsons Dockyard, named after the Admiral who spent three years on the island as a young captain. The capital, St Johns has a fabulous, lively market which is encircled with interesting little shops and boutiques. The cathedral is alos worth a visit with its unique colourful stained glass windows.
Whist exploring the island you will notice many disused sugar mills, these are testimony to Antigua's past as a major sugar-producing island. Devils Bridge is another impressive scene. It is a natural arch carved by the sea. A bridge was created when a soft part of the limestone eroded away over countless centuries.
A favourite island event for locals and visitors is the weekly party at Shirley Heights. Every Sunday afternoon people gather together to celebrate another week in paradise. Here you will find a barbeque and a live steel band to enjoy. Encouraged by several rum punches people are soon on their feet dancing away to the calypso rhythms, a perfect caribbean afternoon.
